All you need to know about Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Are you an NDIS participant who wants to live a more independent life? SIL (Supported Independent Living) can help you out. Supported Independent Living is an NDIS funding given to a participant to find an organization that will provide them with the support they need to live a more independent life. It’s an invaluable service that provides more personalized support than an informal support network and can help you healthily develop your skills.

What kind of support do you get?

You can get 24-hour daily support with things such as:

  • Personal care
  • Accessing community and social activities
  • Help with household chores such as cleaning and cooking
  • Travelling to attend appointments

How does Supported Independent Living Work?

There’s a category in your NDIS plan called “Assistance in Daily Life”. While it’s technically also a Core Support, you can’t use the more flexible budget for Core Support to access this category. The amount of money that you get for SIL will depend on the amount of support that you need. Your SIL provider will give a quote to the NDIS to help them determine the amount. An Occupational Therapist (OT) can also provide them with supporting documentation.

One of the most essential parts of getting funding for SIL is support coordination. Your Support Coordinator will help you explore different housing goals and connect you with suitable SIL providers while keeping track of your supporting documentation.

How do you get SIL funding?

If you believe SIL can help you live a better life, you’re going to need an OT’s help to determine what level of support and services you need and whether you’ll be eligible for this funding. Get in touch with your support coordinator—they’ll work alongside you to help you find a suitable SIL provider who will make a quote according to your need for support.

Your coordinator will let the NDIS know that you want SIL accommodation, who will review the supporting evidence and work with the SIL providers to assess whether it’s necessary and reasonable.
