Do what’s right for you
NDIS supports Australians with a disability.
Ensure you come with the right people to the meeting and it’s in a place that works for you.
Don’t hesitate to ask for something that suits your needs better. If a planner is organizing a phone meeting, but you prefer to have a face-to-face meeting, speak up. Let them know what is best for you.
Also, note that if the planner calls you at a time you’re busy, you can always ask them to call you back.
Be clear with your planner
NDIS planner doesn’t know you. They’ll only know what you tell them.
You should tell your planner two main things:
Your future goals and what support you need to help accomplish these
Here, it’s your chance to think about what your big goals are for the future and what you want from your life.
Ensure you tell this to your planner:
- What is your end goal?
- Why is it important to you?
- How do you see it happening?
What support do you currently receive, and why do you need it?
Think about the support you currently receive.
You should ask yourself, ‘How would my life be without my existing support?’
Communicate this to your planner to let them understand what your needs are and how important it is for the support to continue.
Be prepared
Don’t overestimate the value of preparation. The more you prepare, the better your odds are of obtaining your best funding package.
This will also help you feel more confident about advocating for your loved one (or yourself). So, start getting ready as soon as you can.
